Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce and Union Pacific Railroad are hosting artists for the

Have You Painted Yet? Schulenburg Plein Air Competition's first year.

​

No Entry Fee

Participating artists will bring one framed example of their

previous plein air work to display in the gallery during competition.

Work should be delivered at orientation.

Prizes and Awards

A total of $3,000 in cash prizes to be awarded.

 

The Have You Painted Yet? competition and show is funded in part by Union Pacific Railroad and organized by Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce and Amanda Danning.

The goal is to promote fine art and plein air in the Schulenburg and surrounding areas.

 

There will be $3,000 in prize money awarded in three categories:

​

  • Schulenburg at Large 

    • Artists may paint any subject found within a 20-mile radius of Downtown Schulenburg including:

      • Host sites

      • Scenes from roadsides and parks

    • Prize money allocation

      • First Place         $500

      • Second Place     $300

      • Third Place        $200

​

  • Painted Churches 

    • Painted after Orientation and turned in by 6 PM Friday the 1st at Senglemann’s Hall

    • The Painted Churches location and details will be further described at Orientation

    • Prize money allocation

      • First Place         $500

      • Second Place     $300

      • Third Place        $200

  • The Schulenburg Quick Draw

    • Artists will paint from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM Saturday.

    • Artists will paint within a defined perimeter in the Downtown Schulenburg area.

      • Third Place        $200

All paintings in the Plein Air Competition must be turned in at Senglemann’s Hall and ready to hang.  All paper work must be completed and accompany the submissions.  Artists may turn in work at anytime during the contest.

Pick up art.  All pick ups need to be arranged via email to amandadanning@gmail.com.

Event dates: 29 November through 2 December.

​

Extended Exhibition dates: 2 December through 23 December.

Specific times for the VIP Reception and Awards Announcements may be adjusted slightly to accommodate other Schulenburg festivities.

Competition Rules

  1. Artist must be present at Awards Ceremony on Saturday to claim prize. If artist is absent, prize will be awarded to the next artist in succession.

  2. Art may be of any medium.

  3. Artists must submit at least four (4) plein air paintings (complete with event stamp) for judging.

  4. Only one (1) QUICK DRAW piece of art may be submitted. QUICK DRAW submission may count as one of the four (4) paintings.

  5. Paintings must have event stamp and be created during the official painting period of 28 November -2 December, to be eligible for awards. 

  6. Art must be submitted by 6 PM, Friday 1st.

  7. Submission of artwork is defined as being turned into officials at Senglemann’s Hall, framed and ready to hang with all tags and paperwork completed.

  8. All contest paintings must be for sale with a $ 350 minimum price. No exceptions. No trades or barters.

  9. Minimum size: 8 x 8 (or 64 united inches), excluding frame. No Exceptions 

  10. Maximum size: No side may exceed 36 inches, excluding frame. No exceptions. 

  11. All work must be in gallery quality frames “wired” (no saw-tooth hangers, no glue, no tape) and ready for hanging. No exceptions. 

  12. No Gallery Wrap Canvases.

  13. Artists will be able to keep all funds with the exception of any charges for credit card sales.

 

Artist agrees that images of artist and work produced during the competition may be used for Marketing and Educational Purposes in the promotion of the City of Schulenburg, the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce or future art events.  Neither the City of Schulenburg or the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce can sell the images as artwork/posters.  Use of the images may only be for promotional items or as marketing.  Each time the image is used, the artist is to be credited by name.

Promotional items may include but is not limited to calendars, mugs, and t-shirts.  If art from the contest is used on promotional items, the artist’s name must be clearly included on the promotional item.

Karen Vernon

​

As a professional artist with a worldwide market, she has achieved notable recognition.  Karen was invited to show her work in a three-year traveling museum exhibition entitled "Sea to Shining Sea".  She was one of 47 artists selected to participate in this major project honoring our country.  Her paintings hang in museum collections in Europe and in the United States, as well as private and corporate collections, such as the Royal Family of Saudi, Delta Airlines, the Chateau de Vuilliens, the National PGA Headquarters, the Moody Gardens Resort Hotel, and the Walt Disney Corporation.  She has been elected to the Birmingham Watercolor Society, Birmingham, U.K.,is in Who's Who in American Art, Strathmore's Who's Who and holds a signature membership in the Texas Watercolor Society and the Watercolor Art Society - Houston
