S.T. Schaefer
Building
405 & 407 North Main St.
This structure was built
by S.T. Schaefer in 1896, originally containing an office and business owned by
S.T. Schaefer which sold paint, building materials, and undertaker supplies. The
structure also housed the Palace Saloon. It is located to the far east end of
the block today. It houses the local weekly newspaper, and Genzer's Produce
Company.

First Baptist Church
6 North Upton Ave.

Melba St.)
This church was first organized as the High Hill Missionary
Baptist Church in 1871. The original church building was moved to Schulenburg in
1871 and became the first church in our community. It was reorganized as the
First Baptist Church in 1927. In 1972, it was honored with an historical marker
and became a recorded Texas Historical Landmark. The structure was moved again
to its present location in 1989. This church has continued to be enlarged and
remodeled, but its original building is still a part of the church as its
fellowship hall.

This Victorian-style home was built in 1893 by a local
contractor, Henry Bohlmann. The home still stands today at the far north end of
West Ave. |

Gus Russek Mansion
409 West Ave.This mansion was built by Gus Russek in 1909. It was built as
a two-storied showplace in late Victorian-style. This home is highlighted with a
wide and tall set of pastel pink steps leading to its front doors.

Anderson Place
510 South Main St.
This home was built by William B. Anderson before 1857. It
was later bought in 1867 by Louis Schulenburg, for whom the town is named. This
home is the oldest occupied house in the are, receiving an historical marker in
1971.

Baumgarten Cotton Gin
700 Block of North Main St.
This building was constructed in mid 1870. The bricks used in this building were
manufactured at the Baumgarten brick kiln. This structure housed a mule powered
cotton gin. Later a mattress factory, wire basket works, a bottling works, and
finally a warehouse.

Gus Cranz Mansion
701 West Ave.
This mansion was built in 1874 for Gus Cranz by immigrant
carpenters from Austria. The home was designed in the strict German way joints
mitered and facade styled after an Austrian villa. It was the birthplace of
several family members. It received an historical marker in 1964.

American Legion Hall
Wolters ParkLocated in the southeast
portion of Wolters Park is a hall that was built in 1886 by a local contractor. Originally
known as Turnverein (Turner Hall). Over the years, it was also called the Opera
House of Schulenburg and the City Auditorium. The hall was moved to the park in
1937. In front of the hall is a memorial monument portraying the men from our
community who lost their lives in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam
War.

Von Minden Hotel
607 Lyons Ave.
This historical hotel was built in 1927, and contained 41
rooms. Besides being a hotel it also contains the local movie theater. The
theater opened in November 1927 and the hotel the following year. Today, this
hotel is the only one in Texas with a functioning theater featuring the latest
films.

City Cemetery

The city cemetery received an historical marker in 1976 as the burial place for
Col. Wm. F. Upton.

Wolters Cabin
Jacob Wolters'
original log cabin received a marker in the 1955, which states, "This
log cabin erected at Industry, Austin County Texas, in 1835 by Jacob
Walters. Moved to Wolters Park in Schulenburg, Texas, by the
Wolters-Herder Family Association in August, 1941. Dedicated on June 14,
1942, to the memory of past generations, to the enjoyment of the
present, and to the care and preservation of generations to come. " The
land for this park was donated to the city in July 1936 by R. A.
Wolters, Oscar Wolters and Alfred Wolters. |

Schaefer Observatory
In the 1920's, Edison Schafer charged 50
cents per person to view the sky through his homemade observatory. It
stood for many years as part of the SISD campus before being donated to
Blinn College. |
